Training Advice

The Tour is five days of high temperatures, long distances and rough roads and tracks. Physical preparation is the key to finishing this race. The fitter you are the easier you will be able to acclimitaze to the heat. Arriving early in Dili will provide the best heat acclimitization.

Without prescribing a specific training programme, it is suggested that riders are comfortable with multiple long days (100km) in the saddle over rough terrain. Practicing drinking and eating over a six hour riding day on consecutive days is the best option.

A gym/weight program in conjunction with your cycling training will provide all round body fitness, necessary for surviving the rigours of this race. Common issues with riders has been wrist and hand numbness, saddle chafing and foot pain. Toughening up of these areas of the body is recommended.

Getting professional advice for a perfect MTB bike fit and using seat, handlebar grips, and pedals that you are comfortable with is also a good idea. Good fitting shoes will help significantly as will padded cycling gloves. Speed is also a key requirement to place well in the tour.
