Alola Foundation
Women’s empowerment

Alola Foundation is a not for profit non government organization operating in Timor Leste to improve the lives of women and children. Founded in 2001 by the then First Lady, Ms Kirsty Sword Gusmao, the organization seeks to nurture women leaders and advocate for the rights of women.

Alola Foundation was originally created to raise awareness of the widespread sexual violence against women and girls in Timor-Leste during the militia attacks of September 1999. Though this is still a key issue for Alola Foundation, today we also provide a wide range of vitally important support programs for the women and children of Timor-Leste.

After more than two decades of resistance againt colonialism and neo-colonialism, the Timor-Leste’s unilateral proclamation of independence was internationally recognised, under the United Nations Transitional Administration for East Timor (UNTAET), in May 20, 2002. In order to contribute to the process of transformation, hoping to infavour of the majority of the Timorese people that are farmers, a group of student solidarity members established Kdadalak Sulimutuk Institute in 2000. Among the original founding members are Antero Benedito da Silva, Jose da Costa Magno, Mateus Tilman and Maria Angelina Lopes Sarmento.

The name Kdadalak Sulimutuk came from a song, Kdadalak sulimutuk, suli we inan, composed by Franscico Borja da Costa, a poet and a political leader, who was brutally executed by Indonesian armed forces in the first day of the invasion, December 07, 1975. Literally, ‘kdadalak Sulimutuk, suli we inan’ means ‘streams meet, flow great rivers.’ Ordinary oppressed people, come together they could make great changes. Kdadalak Sulimutuk Institute is built on the fundamental values of humanism, ecological protection and people’s democracy. The basic guiding principles include; solidarity social, social and ecological justice, and constant learning.

Vision: Attaining a new and just world, where all people can live in social equality, peace, solidarity and ecologically sustainable society.

Many Hands

Get involved link here: http://manyhands.org.au/get_involved/

In March 2009, MHI Director Kim Dunphy began a three year PhD research project investigating the role of participatory arts in social change in Timor-Leste. Funded by Deakin University, this project examines the impact of participatory arts programs on those involved: project organisers, participants, audiences and their local communities in Timor-Leste. It also seeks to explore ways of evaluating the impact of arts participation, both in terms of the practices currently in use by organisations leading arts projects in Timor-Leste (and other places) and the possibilities for future improvement of practice. The research is intended to provide an evidence base for MHI, assisting us to be as efficient and effective as possible in our work with communities through arts and culture. We seek to provide the best outcomes for communities with the most judicious use of resources. Kim’s research has so far been presented at a number of conferences around the world and many of the presentations are available for download below.
